TRYING FOR THE THREE-PEAT IN A RECORD SETTING ERA

Thirty seasons ago, an Alberta team became the only one in CCAA history to enter the CCAA National Hockey Championships looking for a third CCAA title in three years.

The 1986-87 NAIT Ooks were a part of a record breaking four consecutive conference championships, seven consecutive conference championship final appearances and 43 straight playoff appearances. Of the four conference champions, the 1986-87 edition was the only one to lose a game in conference playoffs. The loss ended a conference record 16 game playoff winning streak which began on February 23, 1984 and ended on March 6, 1987.

National championship banner hopes were dashed when the Ooks dropped a 4-2 decision to the eventual CCAA champions, the St-Laurent Patriotes in the semi finals of the Camrose event. The Ooks brought home bronze medals after a 5-3 win over the hometown Camrose Lutheran College Vikings.

In their four season reign as conference champions, the Ooks set additional conference records. The Ooks won a conference record 52 straight regular season and playoff games in the conference. The streak included a conference record 42 consecutive regular season triumphs between December 4th, 1983 and October 19th, 1985.

The six streaks still stand as conference records.
